Generated from the inputs below — a record you can revisit, or share with anyone helping you plan.
The monthly payment your plan projects, before tax.
Does the benefit increase with inflation? This changes which multiplier is used.
If payments have already started, set this equal to your current age.
A rough estimate of remaining life expectancy from the start age. 22 years approximates a 65-year-old's expectancy.
A rate near long-term Treasury yields is the conservative convention for a guaranteed benefit — not an equity return rate.
0 if single-life only. A 100% joint-and-survivor election is worth more than a single-life pension paying the same amount.
Only the vested portion is genuinely yours. Use 100% if fully vested.
Discounted value of your pension today, at 100% vesting, using a 4.0% discount rate over 22 years of expected payments.
Same as above — you are fully vested.
Annual benefit ($33,600) × 20. A faster, cruder estimate — the present-value figure above accounts for timing and is more accurate.
$2,800/month × 12.
The pension's value at age 65, before discounting back 20 years to today.

Open calculatorA defined-benefit pension has no account balance, which is why it is the asset most often left out of a net worth calculation — and leaving it out can understate net worth by hundreds of thousands of dollars.
This calculator gives you two estimates side by side: a quick multiplier shortcut (20–25× the annual benefit) and a more accurate present value calculation that discounts the expected payment stream back to today's dollars. Neither is exact — a pension valuation is an estimate by nature — and the gap between the two figures is itself useful information about how sensitive the answer is to method.
For the full derivation, worked examples, and why this figure isn't directly comparable to published net worth percentiles, see how to value a pension for net worth.
Three inputs drive the answer more than the formula itself:
Vesting matters too: an unvested pension is not yet yours, so only the vested share should count toward your net worth.
If you add this valuation to your net worth and then compare the result against published benchmarks, you are not comparing like with like. The Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances counts defined-contribution account balances directly, but it does not add an estimated present value for traditional pensions to its headline net worth figures.
The cleanest approach: track your net worth on the standard convention for benchmark comparison, and a separate "including pension" figure for your own retirement planning, where the pension genuinely does reduce how much you need to save.
Enter your other assets in the net worth calculator for the comparable baseline, and see safe withdrawal rate to model how the pension offsets your portfolio's income needs directly.
This is general information, not financial advice. Pension valuations depend on plan-specific terms — a plan administrator or a fee-only planner can value yours against the actual plan documents.

This calculator is a self-help tool for your own planning. It is not personalized investment, tax, or financial advice, and results should not be treated as a guarantee or a professional recommendation. Federal Reserve figures used here are drawn from the Survey of Consumer Finances, a triennial survey — treat percentile and benchmark comparisons as directional estimates rather than precise rankings, and consider speaking with a qualified financial professional for guidance specific to your situation.
Discount the stream of expected future payments back to today using a discount rate and a life expectancy for the payment period. The result answers what lump sum today would be equivalent to the promised income stream, which is what makes a pension comparable to other assets.
Including its present value gives a more complete picture, particularly for public-sector workers whose pension may be their largest asset. It is worth tracking separately from liquid assets, since a pension cannot be sold, borrowed against or passed on in the same way.
A higher discount rate produces a lower present value and vice versa, so the choice matters a great deal. Rates near long-term high-grade bond yields are a common reference point, on the reasoning that a pension is a relatively secure income stream.
It depends on the implied rate of return in the offer, your health and life expectancy, whether the pension has a cost-of-living adjustment, and the financial strength of the plan sponsor. Comparing the lump sum to the present value of the payment stream is the starting point for that decision.
