$4.5 million Net Worth Percentile — Where You Rank by Age (2026)
A $4.5 million household net worth ranks ahead of roughly 125 million US households and behind about 5.9 million. Your rank for your own age is often very different — see the table below.
A household with $4.5 million in net worth sits around the 96th percentile of all US households. In round numbers, about 125 million households have less than that and about 5.9 million have more. For comparison, the median household has $192,900, and the top 10% starts at $1,940,000.
$4.5 million is above the $1 million mark that about 19% of US households have passed, but it is still a long way from the top 1%, which starts near $13,666,778 for all ages. It also depends on age. The top 1% cutoff is about $2,636,882 for households aged 30–34 and about $22,102,660 for those aged 65–69.
At this level the useful question stops being "where do I rank" and becomes "what can this pay for". A common rule of thumb lets you withdraw about 4% a year, which makes $4.5 million worth roughly $180,000 a year before tax. That only holds if the whole amount is invested, and it usually isn't once the family home is counted. Take out your home equity first, then run the number again.

Data & method
Percentiles are estimated from the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances, 2022 wave (released October 2023), the most recent published wave, by interpolating in log space between the published 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th and 99th percentile breakpoints for each age band. Figures are nominal 2022 survey dollars and are not inflation-adjusted. Median US household net worth in that survey was $192,900 with a mean of $1,063,700. The SCF excludes the Forbes 400 and has limited sample size above the 95th percentile, so upper-percentile estimates should be treated as approximate floors. The 2025 wave is expected in late 2026.
